Why Does My Rabbit's Ear Stand Up and the Other Droop?

If your rabbit's ear is drooping while the other stands erect, it could be due to injury or ear mites. It's crucial to determine the cause promptly. If it's an injury, immediate veterinary attention is necessary.

What Causes a Rabbit's Ear to Droop?

A rabbit with one ear up and one ear down often indicates an issue such as ear mites or an injury, and it needs immediate investigation and treatment. Sometimes rabbits simply droop one ear when they're relaxed or playing. However, if the behavior persists, it might signify ear mites. If ear mites are the cause, you should clean the outer ear with ear drops and then use a product like rabbit-specific ear mite cleaner for the inner ear. However, if the drooping ear is due to an injury, immediate veterinary care is crucial. Ignoring the issue may lead to permanent damage.

Another possible reason for a drooping ear is physical trauma to the ear. Rabbit ears are rich in nerve endings, making them sensitive. Avoid pulling or tugging on your rabbit's ears. When picking them up, always support them from under their forelimbs. Sometimes a minor injury to the ear might heal on its own, but if the ear remains droopy, it is an indication of nerve damage.

If your rabbit's ear is emitting a foul odor, or has black earwax, it's likely a sign of ear mites. You can attempt to clean the rabbit's ears with ear drops and rabbit ear mite cleaner by yourself, or take them to a vet for professional treatment. If the rabbit's ear droops because of trauma or hematoma (a build-up of blood) to the ear, it is very important to immediately clean the ear with hydrogen peroxide and cotton swabs, then rush the rabbit to the vet in order to prevent irreversible damage. Prompt action ensures the best possible outcome for your pet's health and wellbeing.Follow us for updates:Pet Training
