Are Persian Cats the Heaviest Shedders? Should You Shave Them in Summer?

Persian cats, also known as Exotic Shorthairs, are indeed known for being heavy shedders, especially during shedding season. While it might be tempting to shave your Persian cat in the summer, it's generally not recommended. Instead, a trim can help your cat stay cool without the risks associated with shaving.

The shedding from Persian cats is particularly noticeable during the spring and fall shedding seasons. These cats, which are a hybrid breed resulting from the cross of American Shorthairs and Persians, have a dense, medium-length coat that comes in a variety of colors and patterns. These include solid colors, smoke patterns, tabby markings, bi-colors, and pointed variations. Their profuse shedding can lead to significant amounts of hair around the house, requiring frequent cleaning to keep the hair at bay.

Shaving cats, in general, should typically be avoided unless medically necessary, such as for the treatment of ringworm. When a cat's fur is shaved, it removes the natural protection against sun damage which can lead to sunburn and other skin problems if they go outside. In the summer, without the protection of their fur, cats are also more vulnerable to insect bites and bacterial infections. Additionally, if a shaved cat is frequently in air-conditioned environments, they're more prone to colds. Cats rely on their coat for insulation, so removing it can expose them to a number of health risks. Furthermore, shaving can have an emotional impact on cats.
