Abyssinian vs. Norwegian Forest Cat: Which is More Expensive?

When comparing the Abyssinian cat and the Norwegian Forest cat, the Abyssinian generally tends to be more expensive, although the Norwegian Forest cat is certainly not a budget-friendly option. Both breeds boast unique qualities that contribute to their price points.

The price of an Abyssinian cat typically ranges from $850 to $3000 USD. Abyssinian cats are quite popular in the United States, but they are less common in some other markets. Despite their relative scarcity in certain regions, their price remains relatively high. The Abyssinian cat, sometimes nicknamed the 'bunny cat', is known for being naturally independent, yet fiercely loyal to its owner. They can become depressed if neglected. It's also worth noting that Abyssinian cats require ample space to play and explore.

Norwegian Forest cats, on the other hand, generally cost between $550 and $1500 USD. This breed evolved naturally without human intervention, and is renowned for its size and distinctive double coat. The Norwegian Forest cat is unique in having a two-layered coat. The outer layer is slightly oily, much like a goose’s feathers, making it water-resistant. This waterproof coat allows them to remain dry even in rain, snow, or while swimming. The undercoat provides insulation during the winter, and sheds during summer, except for the fur around the rump and lower legs which remains. This makes it appear as if the cat is wearing pants. This undercoat grows back again in the fall. Therefore, both the Abyssinian and the Norwegian Forest Cat have unique characteristics that influence their price tag in the market.
