How Many Times a Day Should Adult Dogs Urinate Outside? Will Morning and Evening Walks Cause Them Harm?

It's generally recommended that adult dogs go out to urinate about four times a day, as their urination frequency is relatively high. However, walking them just in the morning and evening is usually sufficient and won't cause any harm.

Ideally, adult dogs should be taken out to urinate approximately four times daily. Most dogs typically need to urinate every three to six hours. The exact frequency often depends on factors such as the moisture content of their food and their daily water intake. Furthermore, if a dog urinates infrequently, it could indicate insufficient water consumption. Prolonged inadequate hydration can negatively affect a dog's health, potentially leading to urinary system issues like kidney stones. Therefore, ensure your dog has access to plenty of fresh water.

For many pet owners with busy work schedules, walking their dogs twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, is the most practical approach. Adult dogs can generally hold their urine for about 10 hours, making a morning and evening potty break a reasonable routine. If you're concerned about your dog being bored or lonely at home during the day, you can extend their evening walk to allow them more time to play and socialize with other dogs. Regular parasite prevention is also vital. However, be aware that if a dog doesn't urinate for more than 48 hours, it can result in acute kidney damage, and a lack of urination for 72 hours can be life-threatening. If your dog hasn't urinated for 24 hours, you should investigate the potential cause. This could be due to a urinary tract infection, urinary blockage, stones, or even a tumor. Promptly seek veterinary attention if your dog does not urinate in 24 hours.
