How to Determine the Age of an Exotic Shorthair Cat and When They Reach Adulthood

Determining the age of your Exotic Shorthair cat involves observing several key physical characteristics, primarily focusing on their teeth and eyes. These features provide reliable clues to their approximate age. Generally, kittens under one year old have white and sharp teeth, while older cats exhibit signs of wear and tear, discoloration, and other dental issues.

1. Examining the Teeth

Kittens typically begin to develop teeth around 14 days of age, with a full set of baby teeth by 8 weeks. Between 3-4 months, they start to lose their baby incisors, followed by their canines and molars between 4-5 months. By 5-8 months, all baby teeth are replaced by a full set of 30 permanent teeth.

Exotic Shorthair kittens under one year will have bright white, sharp teeth. Cats aged one to two years will show some yellowing, while those between two to five years will likely have tartar build-up, minor wear, and some yellow teeth. They may also experience some looseness and gum disease. Cats from five to ten years old will have moderately worn teeth, some pigmentation, and reduced chewing capacity. Older cats aged ten to fifteen years will exhibit significant wear, heavy tartar build-up, tooth loss, significantly reduced chewing capacity, and blunted teeth.

2. Analyzing the Eyes

The iris of an Exotic Shorthair's eye also provides age indicators. Younger cats have clear, smooth irises. In contrast, older cats' irises become thinner with pigment deposits appearing mottled or speckled. Some elderly cats may suffer from senile iris atrophy, which manifests as irregular edges and gaps, appearing linear or hole-like. This is often seen in cats over the age of 12.

When is an Exotic Shorthair Considered an Adult?

An Exotic Shorthair is considered an adult at one year old. Cats under 12 months are classified as kittens. Adulthood is defined as the point when the cat's organs and tissues are fully developed, enabling basic reproductive functions. Their physical characteristics are generally set and will not change much further. After reaching adulthood, ensure your Exotic Shorthair maintains a healthy diet to prevent conditions such as obesity which can lead to heart, joint, and other health issues.
