How to Tell If Your Dog is Cold While Sleeping and Signs of Chilling

When dogs feel cold at night while sleeping, they will exhibit shivering and trembling. They will also curl up their bodies to conserve heat. When owners notice these signs, they need to take immediate steps to provide warmth. In winter, you can add extra padding like cotton batting to their beds. You can also cover them with a blanket while they sleep.

When a dog is feeling cold at night, it will shiver, tremble, and curl up its body to try and stay warm. If you notice these behaviors, immediately take action to warm them up and move their bed to a warm, comfortable location.

During winter, or when temperatures drop, it's recommended to move your dog's bed indoors. Add cotton padding for extra insulation, and cover your dog with a blanket at night. This will prevent them from catching a cold.

During the winter, owners can feed their dogs high-protein foods to help them build up fat stores for the cold weather. When going outside, make sure your dog wears a coat to stay warm and avoid getting sick.

How to Recognize When Your Dog is Chilled

A chill is often a trigger, primarily causing respiratory issues. Clinical signs include infrequent coughing, clear or watery nasal discharge, sneezing, fever, and increased eye discharge. These symptoms are generally a result of a weakened immune system due to the cold, making them vulnerable to infections from pathogens in the environment. The most common scenario is a mixed viral and bacterial infection. In these cases, medications containing amoxicillin clavulanate potassium and Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang can be helpful. If your dog has a frequent cough with mild other symptoms, it might be a Mycoplasma infection, requiring treatment with doxycycline. If symptoms don't improve with medication, it's essential to visit a veterinarian.
