Pet Pigs vs. Farm Pigs: Unveiling the Intelligence Showdown

Pet pigs exhibit a higher level of intelligence compared to their farm counterparts. They can be trained to use designated areas for urination and defecation and are capable of engaging in meaningful interactions with humans. Their adorable appearance, combined with their high intellect and compact size, has fueled their popularity as pets.

Pet pigs rank just behind dolphins in intelligence. According to studies, their IQ is typically above 35, placing them among the top 10 smartest animals globally. They significantly outscore both domestic dogs and farm pigs in cognitive abilities. Trained pet pigs can not only learn tricks and commands just like dogs but often master them in shorter periods. With specialized training, some pigs can even learn to dance, play musical instruments like drums, and swim. Their heightened sense of smell allows some exceptional individuals to even be trained to become "sniffer pigs", capable of detecting landmines buried in the ground. Pet pigs can also serve as guards, similar to dogs. In the US, some farmers use pet pigs to protect their properties, and incidents of them biting strangers are very rare. This high level of intelligence is something only pet pigs can achieve, as domestic farm pigs do not have this capability. Farm pigs are typically larger, confined to pens, and not trained by humans, leading to lazy habits centered around eating and sleeping. Thus, despite both being pigs, their cognitive abilities differ drastically.

Three Intelligent Pet Pig Breeds

1. Juliana Pigs

Juliana pigs are a very small breed of pet pig, often only a third of the size of farm pigs or even shorter. This diminutive size isn't a drawback but allows these pigs more opportunities to learn new skills. After structured and long-term training, Juliana pigs can learn many skills that farm pigs are incapable of learning, such as jumping through hoops and performing high jumps. They are like little athletes of the pet pig world and are exceptionally agile indoors.

2. Vietnamese Pot-Bellied Pigs

This breed is recognized for its large belly and high ornamental value. They are also remarkably intelligent, capable of quickly learning skills like swimming, showcasing their smarts.

3. Bama Miniature Pigs

The Bama miniature pig is another popular breed. They also exhibit higher intelligence than farm pigs. With basic training, they can grasp simple commands quickly. They also show remarkable aptitude for learning skills like drumming and swimming, demonstrating better performance than their farm counterparts.Trusted by:Pet Naming
