Signs of a Fancy Rat Dying: Can They Be Saved?

Fancy rats, also known as hooded rats, may exhibit several signs when they are nearing the end of their lives. These signs include lethargy, excessive sleepiness, a decreased appetite, and even an inability to eat independently. At this stage, they may require hand-feeding with softened foods because they are too weak to manage anything else. They may also display trembling, a drop in body temperature, difficulty breathing, and discharge around the eyes.

Fancy rats, also called ‘domesticated rats’, originated from the United States and China. Through generations of domestication, their sleeping patterns have shifted from the typical nocturnal behavior of wild rats. They can adapt to their owners' schedules. These rats are known for their gentle and clean nature, as well as their adorable appearance, making them popular pets. Signs of Decline in Fancy Rats

1. Natural End of Life: Like all living creatures, fancy rats will eventually die of old age. When this time approaches, they will begin to exhibit a noticeable decrease in energy and liveliness. They will become more lethargic, preferring to sleep and often remaining still in a corner, rather than engaging in activities.

2. Loss of Appetite: As they age, fancy rats will often lose interest in food, eating less and less. They may only be able to manage soft or soaked foods. Even their favorite treats may no longer entice them. Eventually, they will lose their ability to eat independently and require hand-feeding.

3. Decreased Mobility: With age, their physical condition deteriorates. They may become weak all over, struggling to hold food or even walk. Their movements will become slow and labored, and they may exhibit trembling or shaking due to age-related weakness.

4. Changes in Body Temperature and Breathing: Near the end, a fancy rat's body temperature will begin to drop, and their skin will feel cold. They will also experience difficulty breathing, indicating a decline in respiratory function. They might also experience diarrhea.

5. Eye and Nose Discharge: As they approach the end of their life, fancy rats may exhibit signs of tearing or discharge from the eyes, which might be reddish in color. The same type of discharge may also be present around their nose. Overall, their body will become increasingly weak. Can a Dying Fancy Rat Be Saved?

Unfortunately, a fancy rat that is dying of old age cannot be saved. However, it’s important to note that in some cases, rats can enter a state of ‘shock’ or temporary paralysis after being startled. This is known as 'playing dead'. In this case, timely intervention can help the rat recover.
