It's not recommended to house guinea pigs and chinchillas together. Their temperaments, housing requirements, and dietary needs differ significantly, making cohabitation unsuitable.
Conflicting Temperaments
Guinea pigs prefer a calm and quiet environment. They spend much of their day sleeping, becoming more active primarily in the evening. Chinchillas, on the other hand, are quite active, especially at night, when they love to jump and play. If housed together, a chinchilla could easily step on a guinea pig, leading to injuries like fractures or other trauma, as guinea pigs are relatively fragile.
Different Housing Needs
Guinea pigs do not require tall cages; a height of 30cm or more is sufficient. If the cage is over 40cm, a top cover isn’t even necessary. Guinea pigs prefer to lie down, thus they need ample floor space. In contrast, chinchillas don't need a large floor area but need a tall enclosure, at least 60cm or higher, to facilitate their jumping and climbing. The taller the cage, the better for chinchillas.
Dietary Discrepancies
Guinea pigs are easy to feed and are not fussy eaters. They will happily consume food as long as it's not spoiled, demonstrating a voracious appetite. Chinchillas, on the other hand, are more selective eaters. They have higher standards for food quality and tend to eat only what they find palatable. Chinchillas often pick up a piece of food, nibble on it, and discard it if they don't like it, showcasing their discerning tastes.
