Judging Chihuahua Quality and Signs of Bonding

Purebred Chihuahuas are known for their alertness, intelligence, and courage. They typically stand between 15-23 cm tall at the shoulder and weigh 1-3 kg, ideally not exceeding 6 pounds. The body is generally rectangular, with the length being slightly more than the height. A distinct characteristic is their apple-shaped head, large eyes, and erect ears.

Evaluating Chihuahua Quality

When evaluating a Chihuahua's quality, several key physical attributes need attention. These are important factors for ensuring the Chihuahua meets breed standards:

• Size and Proportions: Chihuahuas are one of the smallest dog breeds, with a shoulder height of 15-23 cm and a weight of 1-3 kg. Smaller Chihuahuas are generally favored, ideally staying under 6 pounds. Exceeding this weight is considered a disqualification in breed standards. Their body has a rectangular shape, with a length slightly greater than their height, particularly for females. Males may have a slightly shorter body length.
• Head Shape: The head is a crucial indicator of breed purity. Purebred Chihuahuas will have a soft spot (molera) on the top of their head, typically about the size of a fingertip. The face should be rounded.
• Eyes: A purebred Chihuahua will have large, but not overly protruding, eyes that are a bright black or red color.
• Ears and Muzzle: The ears are large, erect, and will stand straight when the Chihuahua is alert, set about 45 degrees apart. The muzzle forms approximately a 90-degree angle where it meets the face.
• Neck, Chest, and Tail: The neck should have a slight arch. The chest is supported by rounded ribs, and the body should not be barrel-shaped. The tail is of medium length, held high in a sickle shape, with the tip reaching the back.

Recognizing when a Chihuahua has bonded with its owner involves observing some distinct behaviors. These are signs that your Chihuahua sees you as its primary caregiver and companion:

When a Chihuahua bonds, it will display a lively and active demeanor. It will excitedly greet you at the door when you come home from work and may show signs of reluctance when you leave for the day. The Chihuahua may also try to make eye contact with you and will often watch you closely. A bonded Chihuahua might even mimic you by yawning, signifying a strong emotional connection.
