Chinchillas can eat small amounts of apple or dried fruit, but it’s crucial to avoid giving them fruits with high water content, as this can cause digestive upset.
It’s best to avoid feeding chinchillas any fresh fruit. Fresh fruits have a high water content, and chinchillas are very sensitive to moisture, which can lead to gastrointestinal problems.
If you want to offer fruit, dried fruit is a better option. However, be very careful to avoid any processed or preserved dried fruits, which can cause severe digestive issues. It is generally not recommended to give chinchillas food that has been left out overnight, including water or hay.
A chinchilla’s primary diet should consist of high-quality chinchilla pellets. Supplemental foods can include timothy hay and oat hay. Occasionally, you can give your chinchilla small amounts of nuts like sunflower seeds or peanuts as treats, but too many can cause obesity.
What Should Chinchillas Use for Chewing?
There are several options for chinchilla chew toys. Commonly, they fall into three main categories. First, there are volcanic lava chews, which are rich in natural minerals and great for cleaning a chinchilla's teeth. Second, apple sticks, made from fresh apple branches, have a natural fruity scent that encourages chinchillas to gnaw on them. Third, there are hay blocks. Most chinchillas enjoy hay blocks and the hay is good for their dental health. Free access here:Pet Grooming
