Can You Own a Cocker Spaniel in Beijing?

Unfortunately, owning a Cocker Spaniel within the city limits of Beijing is generally prohibited. This is due to Beijing's pet regulations which restrict the ownership of dogs exceeding 35 centimeters in height at the shoulder. If you are considering owning a Cocker Spaniel, you may need to live in the outskirts or more rural areas.

According to the Beijing Municipal Regulations on Dog Ownership, dogs taller than 35 cm at the shoulder are not permitted in urban areas. Adult Cocker Spaniels typically stand between 38 and 41 centimeters tall, which puts them outside the allowed height limit for the city center. If you are determined to have one, consider living in a rural area or a more remote location to avoid potential problems with local regulations.

Why Are Cocker Spaniels Less Commonly Kept?

Several factors contribute to the challenges of keeping Cocker Spaniels:

1. Ear Issues: Cocker Spaniels possess large, heavily furred ears which lack good ventilation. This makes them prone to ear infections such as ear mites and other bacterial infections which could lead to otitis externa. Regular cleaning is essential, but can be challenging.

2. Grooming Demands: Their long coats require regular grooming to prevent matting. Without regular brushing, their fur can become tangled and difficult to manage.

3. High Energy and Destructive Behavior: Cocker Spaniels are known to be energetic, enthusiastic, and curious. If they don't have sufficient physical exercise, they can become bored and may turn to destructive behaviors such as chewing furniture and household items. Many owners report that these dogs can be prone to "redecorating" their homes. Cocker Spaniels need regular walks and exercise to release their energy.

4. Heavy Shedding: As a long-haired breed, Cocker Spaniels shed considerably, particularly during the spring and fall. This means that more cleaning efforts might be needed around the home.

5. Sensitive Stomachs: Cocker Spaniels have relatively sensitive digestive systems and can be prone to stomach issues if their diets are not carefully managed. Diet plays a significant role in their health and well-being.
