Caring for a 10-Day-Old Labrador Puppy: Challenges and Essential Tips

Taking care of a 10-day-old Labrador puppy is indeed quite challenging, as these very young pups are still entirely dependent on their mother's milk and require meticulous care. They are incredibly vulnerable at this stage, making proper attention essential for their survival and healthy development.

At just 10 days old, Labrador puppies are not yet weaned and their digestive systems are very sensitive. It's highly recommended to feed them puppy-specific milk replacer, ideally goat's milk formula designed for puppies. Offer frequent, small meals, approximately every two hours to avoid overfeeding and digestive upset. Monitoring their feeding habits is crucial for healthy growth. The amount of each feeding should be carefully measured; you need to prevent any possibility of digestion problems in your young Labrador puppy.

Maintaining a suitable environment is also crucial. The ideal ambient temperature for a 10-day-old puppy is around 22-25°C (72-77°F). Newborn puppies are unable to regulate their body temperature, making environmental control necessary. Furthermore, these young puppies cannot yet defecate or urinate on their own, so you will need to gently stimulate their anal and urethral areas with a cotton swab to help them eliminate. This task will need to be done after each feeding.

As the puppy grows, you will need to gradually increase the feeding amounts. Around one month of age, you can begin weaning them from milk. By the time they are 45 days old, they should be completely weaned and transitioned to a diet of puppy-specific soft food or high-quality dry puppy kibble.

Normally, the mother dog would be caring for the puppies directly. However, if a puppy is separated from its mother early, it is crucial to provide them with the same intensive care she would offer. This includes ensuring that the puppy receives proper nutrition to strengthen its resistance and immune system.
