To check for external parasites, closely examine your chinchilla's fur for any signs of movement or tiny black specks, especially near the ears and base of the tail. If you feel tiny, sharp bony structures on your chinchilla, it could indicate a parasite infestation that has caused weight loss. Examining your chinchilla's feces for any sign of parasites or their eggs is a good practice, as well.

Environmental Factors and Dry Skin

Another factor that can trigger excessive scratching is the environment. When the weather becomes dry, the humidity level drops, and this can lead to dry skin in chinchillas, just as it does with other animals. Dry skin often presents as white flakes of dandruff. This dryness can cause intense itching, leading to your chinchilla scratching more frequently. It's important to avoid over-bathing your chinchilla during dry periods, as this can strip away natural oils that protect their skin. Instead, focus on maintaining a comfortable humidity level in their environment and ensuring your chinchilla has access to plenty of fresh water to help keep them hydrated. A balanced, species-appropriate diet also plays a vital role in skin and coat health.
