My American Shorthair is Too Active: Understanding and Managing Your Energetic Cat

It's perfectly normal for American Shorthairs (also known as 'Amercian Shorthairs' or '美短') to be very active. Owners shouldn't try to suppress this natural behavior. If you'd prefer your American Shorthair wasn't constantly running and jumping around, provide them with toys like scratching posts and cat trees to help them burn off energy.

The American Shorthair is a breed native to the United States, with ancestors brought to North America by early European settlers. They share ancestry with the British Shorthair and European Shorthair. American Shorthairs are known for their well-proportioned, strong bodies and their lively yet gentle nature. Young American Shorthair kittens are adorable with their round heads, soft fur, and agile limbs. Their high energy levels stem from excitement and their natural need for exercise. Providing cat toys or cat trees is a good way to channel their energy. Typically, American Shorthair kittens are outgoing and playful. As they mature around one year old, this will generally improve. They will slowly become more calm and less active.

Pros and Cons of American Shorthairs

1. Pros

American Shorthairs are undeniably cute, with gentle, playful, and affectionate personalities. They are also intelligent and easily trained. You can teach them tricks like 'sit,' 'shake,' and 'high five.' Their playful nature means they'll actively engage with their owners. However, as they grow older, American Shorthairs will also become more composed and sensible. They also have relatively long lifespans, often reaching 15-20 years.

2. Cons

While their playfulness is endearing, their high activity levels can be a downside. They might seek entertainment around the house, which could lead to damage if they don’t have appropriate outlets for their energy. Owners should consider providing interactive toys to avoid wear and tear on furniture and other items.

It’s important to remember that their high energy is a natural part of their breed. A combination of interactive play, mental stimulation, and appropriate cat furniture can help any American Shorthair, even the most playful, live a happy and healthy life.Follow us for updates:Pet Training
