What to Do If Your Dog's Whiskers Are Cut Off

If your dog's whiskers have been cut, you'll unfortunately have to wait patiently for them to grow back. It's important to know that whiskers are crucial for dogs, aiding in balance. They generally shouldn't be trimmed, as doing so can make your dog feel disoriented and impair their spatial awareness.

If a dog's whiskers are cut, they might feel very uncomfortable. It can even lead to a decline in their spatial awareness. However, the only thing you can do is wait for them to grow back. A dog's whiskers can detect even the slightest vibrations, including changes in air currents and water flow. When air or water currents change, the whiskers will vibrate. This stimulates nerve cells at the base of the hair follicles. These numerous nerve cells then quickly send the signals through a complex network to the brain for analysis. Additionally, dog whiskers are twice as thick as normal fur. The roots of the whiskers are three times deeper than normal fur and are filled with nerves and blood vessels. When the dog moves, these whiskers act like sensors. A dog’s whiskers are as sensitive as our fingers, helping them understand their environment and coordinate their body.

Causes of Whiskers Falling Out in Dogs

Firstly, a lack of certain nutrients, such as trace elements and vitamins, can lead to poor whisker quality and breakage. It is recommended that owners feed their dogs a diet high in nutritional value, while ensuring a balanced diet. Supplements such as trace elements formulated for dogs can also be given. Secondly, dogs may break their whiskers while playing. This is a common occurrence and pet owners need not worry too much. Furthermore, older dogs may experience whisker loss due to normal physiological processes.Read more here:Pet Breeds
