Why Are Most Stray Cats Orange Tabbies and Which Breeds Are Suitable for Home Keeping?

Orange tabby cats are frequently seen among stray populations, primarily because many are actually domestic shorthair cats. These cats are often inexpensive, leading to a lack of value placed on them and a higher likelihood of abandonment. Moreover, orange tabbies tend to be quite resilient, with a rapid reproduction rate in the wild, contributing to their prevalence among strays.

In many regions, particularly in China, the majority of orange tabbies are domestic shorthairs, available at very low costs or even for free. This lower perceived value unfortunately increases their chances of being abandoned. Additionally, unlike some domesticated breeds that are very dependent on their owners, orange tabbies are highly adaptable and can survive well even without human care. Their strong survival instincts and rapid breeding contribute to the large number of orange tabby strays. If an owner mistreats them, they are more likely to leave home. This combination of factors makes them a common sight among feral cat colonies.

Suitable Cat Breeds for Home Keeping

When choosing a feline companion for your home, several breeds are known for their easy-to-manage temperaments and adaptability to indoor living.

1. British Shorthair

The British Shorthair is a popular breed known for its adorable appearance and gentle, even-tempered personality. Through selective breeding, they have developed a strong adaptability to various environments and are generally robust, making them an excellent choice for first-time cat owners. They are not particularly prone to health issues, which is a bonus for new pet parents. Their calm nature also means they don’t require a lot of attention, making them low-maintenance compared to more demanding breeds.

2. Ragdoll

Ragdolls are renowned for their stunning appearance and exceptionally sweet and gentle nature, which makes them perfect indoor companions. One thing to note is that Ragdolls do tend to shed, so regular grooming is essential to manage their coat. Ragdolls thrive on affection, making them ideal family pets. They are known to be docile and relaxed, perfect for cuddling and spending quiet time indoors.

3. Siamese

Siamese cats are known for their sleek appearance and intelligence. These cats are also very affectionate and form strong bonds with their owners. With the right nutrition and care, they are a great option for new cat owners, offering an affectionate, interactive, and loyal companion. They are not as independent as some other breeds, so they appreciate the human connection. Their characteristic vocal nature also makes them very engaging pets for owners who are happy to have a cat who ‘talks’ with them.Follow us for updates:Pet Training
