Why is My Silver Point Cat Not Eating, Drinking, and Only Sleeping? How to Solve It

A Silver Point cat that is not eating, drinking, and only sleeping is often caused by reasons such as catching a cold, emotional distress, gastroenteritis, or feline panleukopenia (feline distemper). The owner needs to determine the cause based on the specific situation.

1. Cold

If your cat suddenly loses appetite and sleeps a lot, it might be a cold. The cat may also have symptoms such as a dry or runny nose and abnormal body temperature. Therefore, the owner should take the cat's temperature. If the cat has a cold, the owner can give it cat-specific cold medicine and keep it warm. A cat’s normal temperature ranges between 100.5 and 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit. A temperature above this range can indicate a fever.

2. Emotional Distress

A bad mood can also cause a cat to lose appetite and sleep a lot. This may be due to the owner's lack of interaction with the cat, constantly ignoring the cat's feelings, or the owner suddenly scolding the cat. If you suspect your cat is depressed, spend more time with them, talk to them in a soft voice, and provide a safe and comfortable environment. Try engaging them in gentle play, offer their favorite treats, and provide a quiet resting place. In response, the owner can hold the cat and pet it more often, and give it some of its favorite snacks. Cats, like humans, can also experience stress and anxiety, which can manifest in loss of appetite and excessive sleeping.

3. Gastroenteritis

If the cat is not eating, is lethargic, and also has symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, the owner should be alert for acute gastroenteritis. Once the cat has gastroenteritis, the owner should first withhold food for a day and continue to observe the condition. Then, give the cat anti-inflammatory medicine and, two hours later, probiotics. The most common causes of gastroenteritis in cats include dietary indiscretion, food allergies, infections (bacterial, viral, or parasitic), and the ingestion of toxins. If your cat has persistent vomiting or diarrhea, consult with your veterinarian for proper diagnosis and treatment.

4. Feline Panleukopenia (Feline Distemper)

Feline panleukopenia, or feline distemper, can also cause a cat to lose appetite and want to sleep all the time. At this time, the cat will often have other abnormal symptoms such as diarrhea and elevated body temperature. If the cat is suspected of having feline panleukopenia, the owner should take the cat to a veterinarian for examination as soon as possible to avoid delaying the best treatment time.
