Anal glands are located on either side of a dog’s anus. These pear-shaped sacs fill with anal gland fluid which is normally expelled during bowel movements to lubricate the area and facilitate smooth passage. While these fluids are usually released during defecation, they often accumulate within the sacs. When left unaddressed, the fluid will darken and develop a strong, foul odor. If your dog smells very pungent even after bathing, scoots their rear on the floor, chases their tail excessively, or becomes overly sensitive when you touch their rear, it's an indication that their anal glands need attention.

Then, secure your dog, keep them calm, and locate their anal glands. Then gently press and massage, using gradually increasing pressure to push out the fluid. Continue repeating this process until the anal glands are empty. This will not only remove the foul odor, it also reduces the chance of anal gland infections.

Important Considerations When Expressing Anal Glands

1. When expressing your dog's anal glands, place a paper towel or cotton pad over the anus to prevent any of the smelly liquid from splashing on you.
