Dog Hypothermia: Is There Still Hope?

If your dog has a low body temperature, owners can improve the situation by keeping them warm and providing glucose supplements.

How to restore a dog's body temperature depends on their age: First, for young puppies, hypothermia might result from illness or hunger. If hunger is the cause, provide a suitable amount of concentrated glucose. If it’s due to illness, offer glucose first, then take them to the vet for diagnosis and targeted treatment. Second, for older dogs with low body temperature, the primary step is to find out the root cause before treating it. Regardless of the dog's age, when hypothermia occurs, physical warming methods such as a hot water bottle or a pet-safe electric blanket are beneficial for initial temperature support.

Is There Hope When a Dog's Temperature is Low?

With timely treatment, dogs with low body temperatures can survive. As soon as you notice your dog's temperature is low, ensure immediate warming measures and rush them to a veterinary clinic immediately. For puppies, consider the possibility of hypoglycemia or viral diseases such as parvovirus. In adult dogs, low temperature could result from a cold or other illnesses. It is essential to have a thorough check-up to determine the root cause, then to get them targeted treatment. Remember, low body temperature, or hypothermia, is a critical condition requiring immediate attention.
