How Cold is Too Cold for a Papillon? Recognizing When Your Papillon is Feeling Chilly

While Papillons have relatively long fur, they are not particularly cold-hardy. When temperatures drop below 10°C (50°F), Papillons will start to feel the cold. Therefore, it's essential for owners to provide adequate warmth and protection during the winter months.

Despite their coat length, Papillons have poor cold resistance, generally feeling chilly when temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius. They also have a weaker immune system, making them susceptible to colds and complications such as fever.

During winter, ensure your Papillon has proper cold-weather protection. First, maintain a comfortable temperature in their living space; if it gets too cold, turn on the heating. Additionally, provide thick blankets and a warm dog bed for them to sleep on comfortably.

When taking your Papillon outdoors, dress them in appropriate clothing. Make sure the clothing fits well to avoid discomfort. Also, use paw protectors to prevent frostbite on their feet.

How to Tell if Your Dog is Cold

1. Curling Up

A dog's coat is their natural protection, but even with a thick coat, they can still feel cold. If your Papillon curls up into a ball in a corner or under a bed and becomes still, it's highly likely they're cold. They will instinctively try to protect their abdomen and head, often tucking their head into their tail and becoming unresponsive. This is a clear sign that your dog is feeling cold.

2. Becoming Quieter

When feeling cold, dogs won’t be very vocal. They'll tend to become quiet as an instinctive response. They conserve energy to maintain their body heat, becoming less active and preferring to lie down quietly. Of course, what they want most is for their owner to notice these signs.

3. Shivering

Shivering is the most direct sign of a dog feeling cold. For instance, if your dog goes outside first thing in the morning, they might shiver as an initial shock from the cold. However, shivering can also be caused by underlying illnesses, so it's important to observe for other symptoms.
