How to Correct Border Collie Puppy's Nipping and Chewing

If your Border Collie is chewing on things it shouldn't, you can correct this behavior by immediately and loudly scolding them and implementing appropriate punishments. Border Collies are highly intelligent and with consistent correction, they will quickly understand and stop the undesirable chewing habits.

While adult Border Collies often appear intelligent and disciplined, it's important to remember that this is a result of training and maturity. When they are puppies, before any training, they can exhibit unwanted behaviors like excessive barking and chewing, just like any other puppy. After all, puppies are still developing; their personalities haven’t fully formed. They are like toddlers and can be quite mischievous. To prevent these bad habits from persisting into adulthood, owners must address any unwanted nipping or chewing immediately when observed.

Border Collies are very intelligent and learn quickly through training, which makes addressing chewing habits relatively easy. When you find your puppy chewing on inappropriate items, you should firmly and loudly scold them. The reprimand should be immediate. After being scolded, the dog will be less likely to repeat the behavior. To reinforce this learning, you can implement a consequence, such as having the puppy stay in place for a period before allowing it freedom again. Border Collies have great memories, so consistent training will quickly establish proper behavior and reduce undesirable chewing habits.

It's important to remember that training must be done without violence. Puppy nipping and chewing are typical behaviors, which can be modified through guidance. Physical punishment is not only ineffective, but can also make the dog afraid of you and create unhealthy environment for the puppy. Instead of violence, focus on positive reinforcement and consistent training methods to help your puppy develop good behaviors and stop chewing everything.
