The Belgian Shepherd Dog is categorized into four distinct breeds: the Belgian Malinois, the Belgian Groenendael, the Belgian Laekenois, and the Belgian Tervuren. Each of these breeds has unique characteristics that set them apart.
1. Belgian Malinois
The Belgian Malinois is a short-haired Belgian Shepherd, and the only short-haired variety among the four. This breed has a long-standing reputation for its exceptional working abilities. They are highly favored by law enforcement and military organizations worldwide due to their high trainability, sustained energy, alertness, keen sense of smell, courage, strong bite, high prey drive, good jumping ability and great adaptability. These traits make them outstanding working dogs.
2. Belgian Groenendael
The Belgian Groenendael is a long-haired, black Belgian Shepherd. It has a long, straight, and abundant outer coat, with a silky or coarse texture. The undercoat is very dense, providing excellent protection against extreme weather conditions. The hair on the head, outer ears, and lower legs is shorter, and the erect ears are protected by tufts of hair. The longer and more abundant fur forms frills, such as the ruff around the neck, the feathering on the back of the forearms, and the long feathering on the thighs and the pants, as well as the long, heavy, and full hair on the tail.
3. Belgian Laekenois
The Belgian Laekenois is a rough-coated Belgian Shepherd, and it is the rarest of the four varieties. There is not much detailed information about the temperament of this breed due to its scarcity.
4. Belgian Tervuren
The Belgian Tervuren is a long-haired, fawn or grey-toned Belgian Shepherd. They are known for being intelligent, courageous, alert, and deeply loyal to their owners.
