How Long Before a Teddy Bear Dog Forgets Its Owner?

Once a Teddy Bear Dog (also known as a Miniature Poodle or Toy Poodle) has bonded with you as its owner, it will not forget you, no matter how long you are apart. They won't act like a stranger toward you. However, this is based on the condition that you treat your Teddy with genuine care and have built a deep emotional connection. If the bond is not very strong from the beginning, it’s possible that they may forget you after about three months.

Teddy Bear Dogs are incredibly intelligent, ranking second among all dog breeds in terms of smarts. If a Teddy Bear Dog has recognized you as its owner, it will remember you even after extended periods of separation; this bond can last a lifetime. However, if the owner does not invest significant time or effort into the care of their pet, or if they don't fulfil their responsibilities as a pet owner, a Teddy might not develop a strong bond of trust and dependency. In such cases, they might forget their owner after about three months of separation. Dogs are extremely loyal pets with a high level of obedience towards their owners. Once a dog accepts someone, they will follow that person for life. Therefore, if you have a Teddy Bear Dog, you must treasure them and never abandon them easily. They will remember you until the end of their lives.

Will a Teddy Bear Dog Accept a Second Owner?

Emotionally, Teddy Bear Dogs need to view their owner as a 'mother' figure, someone to whom they can attach and trust. Socially, and within their family structure, they need to see their owner as a 'leader' to whom they can be loyal and obedient. Once a Teddy recognizes its owner, that bond is for life. If the first owner abandons them, they will experience a psychological waiting period of around a month, hoping for the owner to return while their hurt feelings gradually heal. During this stage, a Teddy often eats very little or refuses food entirely, becoming timid and moody.

For a Teddy, accepting a second owner is a process of rebuilding its social structure. However, no matter what, the second owner will never hold the same position in the Teddy's heart as the first. Because the 'motherly' attachment to the first owner is broken, the attitude towards the second owner is more about following commands. Therefore, most abandoned Teddy Bear Dogs will bond with a second owner.
