How to Recognize Canine Distemper Symptoms and Their Causes

If your dog exhibits symptoms such as coughing, thick nasal discharge, purulent eye discharge, thickened footpads, or seizures, it might be infected with canine distemper. Canine distemper is primarily caused by the transmission of the canine distemper virus from the environment. It's highly recommended that owners vaccinate their dogs regularly to prevent such infections.

The initial symptoms of canine distemper often manifest as respiratory issues, similar to a common cold. These can include coughing, sneezing, thick nasal discharge, and purulent eye discharge. You might notice excessive secretions around your dog's eyes, and the eyelids may appear swollen, deviating from their normal appearance. These symptoms are especially concerning in puppies under one year old and should prompt an immediate investigation for distemper. Another indication is the thickening of the footpads on all four paws. Furthermore, seizures can occur, including irregular limb twitching, which points to peripheral nerve damage. If the dog collapses and has seizures, it suggests involvement of the cerebral cortex, indicative of viral meningitis. Seizures resulting from viral meningitis are particularly challenging to treat, with a low survival rate.

What Causes Canine Distemper?

The primary cause of canine distemper is a weakened immune system in dogs, which makes them susceptible to infection when exposed to the canine distemper virus in their environment or in the air. Canine distemper is a highly contagious disease, and without prompt treatment, it has a high mortality rate.

Initially, infected dogs may show mild cold-like symptoms, such as lethargy, reduced appetite, fever, increased eye and nasal discharge, coughing, and vomiting. As the disease progresses, symptoms like rough coat and diarrhea can also appear.

It's crucial to seek veterinary care promptly. Delaying treatment until the later stages of distemper significantly increases the complexity of the treatment and makes recovery less likely.
