Can Dogs Take Fish Oil Long-Term? And How Often?

It's not recommended to give your dog fish oil every day. Long-term daily fish oil supplementation can lead to health issues such as vomiting, diarrhea, weight gain, and fatty liver disease in dogs.

While fish oil is rich in lecithin, which can contribute to a healthier coat, providing it daily can actually be detrimental. Over-supplementation can cause vomiting, diarrhea, weight gain, and fatty liver, putting unnecessary strain on your dog's body. It's best to adhere to recommended dosage guidelines and remember that dog food should remain their primary source of nutrition, supplemented with cooked meats as treats or to enhance meals.

How Often Should You Give Your Dog Fish Oil?

Generally, one fish oil capsule per day, about three times a week, is a suitable guideline. Smaller breeds should receive a smaller dose, while larger breeds can have a slightly larger dose. However, it's crucial to avoid overfeeding fish oil to ensure your dog's health isn't compromised.

We recommend using deep-sea fish oil, it's extracted from cold-water fish and is rich in unsaturated fatty acids. It is known to effectively boost canine brain development, lower blood lipids, enhance immunity, prevent joint problems, and improve skin and coat health. It is affordable and has a good reputation for quality and effectiveness.
