It's quite normal for a cat to meow incessantly before giving birth, primarily due to heightened anxiety and a need for reassurance from their owner. Expectant feline mothers feel vulnerable and seek comfort during this period. On the day of labor, you might observe a decline in appetite, restlessness, and a slight increase in body temperature. Close monitoring is essential during this time.
Firstly, ensure your cat is in a familiar and comfortable environment. Cats nearing labor often experience increased insecurity, which can manifest as constant meowing. Secondly, check if her water has broken. During labor, she might meow due to pain. If her water breaks but kittens aren't delivered, a prompt visit to the vet for an oxytocin injection or a C-section may be necessary.
In the initial stages of labor, there are some common symptoms you can expect. A cat’s appetite may decrease, and she may become restless or seek a secluded place. Prepare a nesting area for her using old clothes or puppy pads. You might also notice a slight drop in body temperature; if you can measure her rectal temperature, it may be between 37.5 to 38 degrees Celsius. Thirdly, as labor progresses, she will start having contractions. You'll notice her pushing, or straining. It is crucial not to disturb her at this point. Usually, after she starts straining, the first kitten should arrive within a couple of hours. If it takes two or three hours without any kittens being delivered, a visit to the vet is essential as the kitten may be stuck in the birth canal.
