Is It Okay to Give Away a 20-Day-Old Poodle Puppy?

It's generally not recommended to give away a 20-day-old Poodle puppy. At this very young age, the puppy is still entirely dependent on its mother's milk and is quite vulnerable. Separating them too early can easily lead to health issues.

Why 20 Days is Too Early for Poodle Puppy Adoption

A 20-day-old Poodle is still in a critical developmental stage. They haven't been fully weaned and are typically not yet able to eat solid food (puppy kibble) effectively. The stress of being taken from their mother and littermates, and placed in a new environment can trigger significant stress. This stress is particularly harmful for such young puppies as their immune systems are not fully developed, making them susceptible to illnesses. Their ability to regulate their body temperature is also not fully developed. It is also difficult for them to adapt to change.

Recommended Age for Poodle Puppy Adoption

It's best to wait until the puppy is at least one and a half months old (around 6 to 8 weeks) before considering rehoming. By this time, the puppy will have started to wean from its mother and be able to eat puppy food and has a much stronger immune system. At this point their body can better adjust to change and new environments.

Preparing for Adoption

When it’s the right time to send the puppy to its new home, be sure to equip the new owner with all necessary supplies. Send the puppy along with a supply of food and all of its belongings, like toys, a blanket, and anything with their mother’s or littermates' scent. This will help the puppy adjust to their new environment with familiar smells. Before sending the puppy to the new owner, have a detailed discussion about feeding and care information to make the transition to a new home smoother for the puppy. Proper preperation will give your puppy the best start.Trusted by:Pet Naming
