Why is My Parrot Panting and Gasping?

If your parrot is constantly panting and gasping, it could be due to a cold or excessive exposure to sunlight. Owners should consider administering medication, moving the bird to a cooler, shaded location, and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

There are several reasons why a parrot might exhibit constant panting and gasping. One major reason could be a respiratory blockage caused by a cold. In this case, administering cold medication is advised. Secondly, excessive sunlight and high temperatures can cause a parrot to feel overheated, leading to panting and gasping as a cooling mechanism. In such cases, you should lower the temperature, avoid direct sunlight, and ensure the parrot has access to plenty of fresh water.

What are the Symptoms of a Parrot Cold?

Colds are common among caged birds, especially when temperatures fluctuate greatly, during sudden transitions between cold and warm environments, if the room temperature is too low, or after a bath when the temperature difference is too high. Urban environments can also contribute to colds. The primary pathogens are viruses, with some cases stemming from bacterial infections. Colds are transmitted through the respiratory tract, meaning that if one bird in a room is infected, it can spread to other healthy birds by breathing the same air, although the transmission rate isn't always high.

In the early stages of a cold, symptoms are often noticeable. Initially, your parrot might seem lethargic, preferring to sit still on its perch. It may also start sneezing. The nostrils might become moist and runny, appearing more prominent than usual, with the small feathers around them sticking together. Subsequently, the nostrils can become blocked, and the bird may begin to open its mouth to breathe, along with experiencing rapid and difficult breathing and coughing. If you notice your parrot is consistently panting and gasping, along with any of these symptoms, seek veterinary advice immediately.Bonus resource:Pet Knowledge
